Youths’ project gives facelift to iconic lake in Ho Chi Minh City

Sunday, July 26, 2015, 14:40 GMT+7

A hallmark lake in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City has put on a new gorgeous look since this weekend.

Under a project to make over Con Rua (Turtle) Lake in District 1, the lake now looks stunning, with its bed cleaned up and its surrounding park area getting a new coating and embellishments.

Scores of stone benches are also put into place so that visitors or passers-by can take a rest or idle for a chat.

A richly colored fountain with a LED lighting system has been installed, giving the lake a modern, friendly appearance.

Gone are the days when visitors were driven away or scared off by the foul odor from human urination and defecation or social ills. Officially named “Cong Truong Quoc Te” (International Public Square), Con Rua Lake serves as a fountain roundabout where Vo Van Tan, Pham Ngoc Thach and Tran Cao Van Streets converge.

Built between 1965 and 1967, the structure is of immense historical and cultural significance and a standing witness to several historic events.

The octagonal lake is divided into smaller spaces by crossing sections above the surface, and boasts surrounding park areas which are frequented by youngsters and tourists.

Some also stroll or sit leisurely on the crossing sections.

The project to give Con Rua Lake such a facelift is part of a campaign called “7Up To Diem Viet Nam” (roughly translated as “7Up Beautifies Vietnam”).

The campaign, meant to give local structures a fresh, dynamic guise, has gathered over 1,000 entries and ideas on decorating public works, submitted mostly by young people.

The project to spruce up Con Rua Lake is the second of the campaign.

Its first project saw a makeover of the dormitory of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, which has earned the facility the recognition by Vietkings – a Vietnamese record organization – as the country’s greenest dorm.
