Int’l experimental theater festival to open in Hanoi this weekend

The Third International Experimental Theater Festival has returned to Hanoi this weekend after ten-year hiatus, with performances from stage artists across three continents.

Taking a decade-long break from its last edition in 2006, the festival marks its return to Vietnam’s capital today with 16 avant-garde acts performed by theaters from Vietnam, the Philippines, China, Japan, Germany, France, Greece, and Panama.

Eight of the acts are shortlisted from 39 international entries, while the other eight will be performed by selected Vietnamese theaters and delegations of performing artists.

The plays are selected based on their discovery and experimental characteristic in the formation of such theatrical components as playwriting, stage and scenic design, and other artistic elements, the festival’s co-organizer Vietnam Stage Artists Association (VSAA) said on its website.

The event offers an opportunity for domestic and international artists to exchange experiences and sharpen their expertise and artistic quality, said VSAA deputy chairman Le Chuc at the festival’s press conference in Hanoi on October 25.

The festival, jointly held by VSAA and the Performing Arts Bureau under Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will run for a full week until November 19.

The opening ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 13, at the Hanoi Opera House.
