Fireworks to light up sky in 21 provinces, municipalities in Vietnam during Tet

Five municipalities and 16 provinces will host fireworks displays on Lunar New Year’s Eve (midnight on February 16) to celebrate the transition between the Year of the Rooster and the Year of the Dog.

Many of the pyrotechnic displays are locally funded by businesses and enterprises.

These shows signal a major shift in governmental attitude toward firework displays on Lunar New Year’s Eve.

Colorful fireworks are expected to light up the night sky of Vietnam, from the northernmost province of Ha Giang, to the southernmost province of Ca Mau, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The displays in Hanoi will last 15 minutes, from midnight until 00:15 am on February 16.

There are 31 launching sites in 30 locations in the capital, the highest in the entire country.

High-range fireworks are to be launched from Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Khanh Lake (Ba Dinh District), Hoang Cau Lake (Dong Da District), Thong Nhat Park (Hai Ba Trung District), Lac Long Quan Flower Garden (Tay Ho District), Van Quan Lake (Ha Dong District), Thanh Tich Park (in My Dinh National Sports Complex), Harmony Lake (Vinhomes Riverside in Long Bien District), and Son Tay Citadel (Son Tay District).

The total budget for the displays amounts to VND10 billion (US$440,730) and was locally raised by the interested businesses and enterprises.

People living in Ho Chi Minh City can enjoy 15-minute firework shows at seven different sites, one high-altitude in the city center, and six low-altitude in peripheral districts.

The high-altitude fireworks shows will be launched from the District 2 entrance to the Saigon River Tunnel.

Low-altitude displays can be observed around Dam Sen Cultural Park (District 11), Nga Ba Giong Memorial (Hoc Mon District), Ben Duoc Memorial Temple (Cu Chi District), Can Gio Football Stadium (Can Gio District), Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park (Nha Be District), and Kenton Node Hotel Complex and Amusement Park (Nha Be District).

Local and private businesses have helped raise the funds for the firework project.

The northern coastal city of Hai Phong boasts three high-altitude displays at Tam Bac Lake, An Bien Lake (Ngo Quyen District), and Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (Thuy Nguyen District).

Da Nang, famous for the Danang International Firework Festival, will host three fireworks shows, at Nguyen Van Troi Bridge, Lien Chieu Administrative Center (Lien Chieu District), and Hoa Vang Administrative Center (Hoa Vang District).

Can Tho City in Mekong Delta have six launching sites with low-altitude fireworks at Nhon Loc Hamlet (Phong Dien District), Long Thanh 2 (Thot Not District), Thoi Thuan B Hamlet (Thoi Lai District), Thoi Hoa Hamlet (Co Do District), and Vinh Loc Hamlet (Vinh Thanh District).

All the projects from the three municipalities are said to be funded by the local businesses and enterprises.

People living in the communes of Meo Vac, Dong Van, Yen Minh, Vi Xuyen, Hoang Su Phi, and Xin Man, as well as the capital Ha Giang City in Vietnam’s northernmost province of Ha Giang will be treated to low-altitude fireworks displays funded by local businesses and enterprises.

Lao Cai Province to the west of Ha Giang also hosts five launching spots, one of them in the tourist mountain town of Sa Pa.

A fireworks display near Ban Gioc Falls on the Vietnam-China border will also be viewable by people living in Cao Bang Province to the east of Ha Giang.

Phu Tho Province to the west of Hanoi, the oldest capital of Vietnam under Hung Kings’ dynasty, will organize six sites of fireworks displays.

The northeastern province of Quang Ninh will host eight launching sites while Ninh Binh Province (91 km south of Hanoi) will have two sites.

The south-central province of Binh Thuan will treat its citizens to five low-altitude fireworks launching spots.

Citizens living in the Central Highlands can enjoy the fireworks at March 10th Square (Buon Ma Thuot City), and four other sites in Lam Dong Province, one of them in Da Lat.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province southeast of Ho Chi Minh City hosts four sites while Long An Province to the west of Ho Chi Minh City boasts six low-altitude firework launching spots.

Other provinces in the Mekong Delta also permitted fireworks displays: Dong Thap with two sites, Tra Vinh with four sites, and Kien Giang with four sites.

The southernmost Ca Mau Province will launch its fireworks displays in the capital Ca Mau City, as well as U Minh and Ngoc Hien Districts.

The permission to launch fireworks in multiple sites in many provinces shows a definite shift in governmental attitude as there was a cancelation of fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve and Lunar New Year’s Eve of 2017.

A 2016 directive by the Secretariat of the Vietnam Communist Party declared that the cancelation was to save money for aiding the disadvantaged living in remote areas by the border or on offshore islands, as well as assisting those affected by environmental pollution.

A number of provinces, such as Dong Nai and Nghe An Provinces, will not host any fireworks displays this year, instead, they will utilize the budget intended for firework projects to help the disadvantaged enjoy a happy Tet.
