The 2019 Day of Pho, the third edition of an annual Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper-backed program to honor the world-renowned food, has found out the top ten pho brands most loved by consumers in Vietnam and the country’s best pho chefs.

December 12 was officially designated as the Day of Pho in celebration of Vietnam’s effective traditional dish in 2018, one year after the first ‘Pho Day,’ an initiative by Tuoi Tre, was held.

Pho is a Vietnamese soup consisting of broth, rice noodles, fresh herbs, and beef.

In celebration of the third Day of Pho, a competition was organized to search for the best pho makers in Vietnam.

The contest was open to both local and foreign chefs who currently work at eateries, restaurants or hotels across the country, as well as non-professional cooks.

Besides, the Day of Pho 2019 also featured a vote-based competition to choose the top ten pho brands most loved by consumers in the country.

These two activities came to a close after a three-month run at the Day of Pho 2019’s gala and awarding night held at White Palace on Pham Van Dong Street in Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday with support from Acecook Vietnam.

Accordingly, the five top prizes, ‘Hoa Hoi Vang’ (Golden Star Anises) worth VND30 million (US$1,200) each, and five second prizes, ‘Hoa Hoi Bac’ (Silver Star Anises) worth VND10 million ($430) each, plus a certificate conferred by the Vietnam Culinary Culture Association and a trophy were awarded to the ten best pho chefs.

Meanwhile, the winners of the favorite pho brands contest received a certificate, a trophy and other gifts.

Nearly 5,000 bowls of pho were also served to guests at the event, which attracted more than a thousand participants.

“This is the day that everyone gets to fully immerse themselves in pho so that they can learn to love and understand the dish and join Tuoi Tre newspaper in helping make it even more widely popular,” Tuoi Tre’s editor-in-chief Le The Chu said at the event.
