Two officials added to Party’s Politburo

Deputy prime minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, 60, and National Assembly deputy chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, 59, were picked up to join the Party’s Politburo during the 7th plenary session of the 11th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) that concluded in Hanoi on Saturday.

Ngan has become the second female member in the Politburo after Tong Thi Phong, who is currently a Deputy Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Vietnam.

The Communist Party’s Central Committee also elected its chief administrator Tran Quoc Vuong to join the Secretariat.

According to the Vietnamese News Agency, during the session, the Party Central Committee discussed renovation and improvement of the political system from the central to local levels, comments on the draft version of the 1992 Constitution, strategic-level human resource planning, climate change adaptation, acceleration of the protection of natural resources and environment.

Below are brief profiles of two newly-elected Politburo members and new member of the Party’s Central Committee’s Secretariat:

* Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan

- Born April 12, 1954 in Chau Hoa commune, Giong Trom district, Ben Tre province - Academic titles: MA in Economics, BA in Politics -

Prior to 2006, Ngan held positions: Director of Ben Tre’s Finance Department, Deputy Minister of Finance, and Provincial Party Committee Secretary of Hai Duong. In 2007, she was elected as Secretary of Party’s Civil Affairs Committee and permanent Deputy Minister of Trade and Commerce. She was promoted to Minister of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs and National Assembly deputy chairwoman in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

* Nguyen Thien Nhan

- Born June 12, 1953 in Phuong Tra commune, Chau Thanh district, Tra Vinh province

- Academic titles: Professor – Ph.D

- From May 2001 to June 2006: permanent deputy chairman of People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. From July 2006 to July 2007: Minister of Education and Training. From August 2007 to June 2010: Deputy Minister and Minister of Education and Training. From July 2010 to present: Deputy Minister.

* Tran Quoc Vuong

- Born Feb 5, 1953 in An Ninh commune, Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province - MA in Laws.

- In July, 2007: Vuong was elected as head of People’s Supreme Procuracy. From July, 2011, he was chief administrator of Communist Party’s Central Committee.
