The two-day State Funeral for the legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap, who died last Friday, officially ended on October 13 admist widespread national mourning and extraordinary outpouring of emotion.

Hundreds of thousands of mourners on Sunday flocked outside to pay their last respects and tribute to the revered independence hero as the grand funeral procession carrying his flag-draped coffin went past major streets in Hanoi capital and Quang Binh central province, the General’s native homeland.

The coffin was flown from Hanoi to Quang Binh in a special civil aircraft and was escorted by Vietnam’s State and Party leaders.

The General rests in peace in Vung Chua in accordance with his wishes as his coffin was put into a grave there at about 4pm on Oct. 13.

Although the funeral came to an end, millions of people country-wide, many in tears, still cry, chant, and pray for the 103-year-old war hero who is dubbed “The General of Vietnamese People”.

17:00: Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, head of the Funeral Committee, gives a thank you speech. Party and State leaders walk around the General’s tomb the last time.

16:59: Party and State leaders, the Funeral Committee members and all citizens at the burial event hold a minute’s silence for General Vo Nguyen Giap.

16g40: Soldiers throw sand into the grave. The General rests in peace.

16g05: The coffin is lowered into the grave.

15:52: The burial service begins.

15:41: The procession takes the coffin to Chuong (Bell) Tower in Vung Chua for the burial service.

15:25: The procession arrives in the funeral area in Vung Chua, Yen Island.

15:00: Sea of people gathered in Vung Chua, Yen Island wait for the grand procession.

14:45: The funeral procession carrying General Giap’s coffin is just 20km away from Vung Chua, Yen Island, according to the Quang Binh funeral committee.

14:16: According to the schedule, the funeral procession will arrive in Vung Chua in minutes.

14:00: In Vung Chua, tens of thousands of people carrying bunches of flowers and the mourning portrait of the General are waiting to pay their last respects to him.

13:50: The funeral procession is still on way to Vung Chua, Yen Island.

12:50: A Tuoi Tre correspondent in Quang Binh says it appears that all Quang Binh people flocked outside to pay a final farewell to General Giap.

12:25am: The funeral procession carrying the General’s coffin leaves Dong Hoi airport for Vung Chua, Yen Island. It will travel a distance of 70km through Bo Trach and Quang Trach districts.

12:15am: A ceremony held to welcome the General’s coffin at Dong Hoi airport ends. The funeral procession is going to take the coffin to Vung Chua, Yen Island. Many people cry upon seeing the coffin.

The coffin is placed into a hearse and escorted by State President Truong Tan Sang and other high-ranking State and Party officials.

12:07am: The coffin is moved off the airplane between two lines of soldiers.

11:50am: The ATR72 aircraft arrives safely at Dong Hoi airport in Quang Binh province.

11:30am: Thousands of people in Quang Binh gather along the streets - where a grand procession escorting the coffin will go through - to pay tribute to the General.

10:25: The civil aircraft carrying the remains of General Giap takes off and will arrive in his native homeland Quang Binh.

10:15am: Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong and other State and Party high-ranking officials bow before the civil aircraft ATR72. The airplane is going to take off.

10am: The funeral grand procession arrived at Noi Bai airport. The military hearse carrying General Giap’s coffin proceeded to the Vietnam Airlines ATR72 plane that is tasked with transporting the coffin from Noi Bai to Dong Hoi airport in Quang Binh where another motorcade was ready to drive the coffin to his resting place in Yen Island in Quang Dong commune, Quang Trach district.

8:50am: The procession went through an area in Cau Giay district and headed towards Noi Bai airport.

8:45am: Though the funeral procession left Hoang Dieu Street, many people still flocked there. One mourner held up a portrait of General Giap with some words underneath, saying “Paying last tribute to the General of the People”. Many others looked at his home and cried.

8:40am: The procession headed towards Noi Bai International Airport where an airplane was ready to fly his remains to his native home land in Quang Binh central province for burial service.

8:37am: Tens of thousands of mourners in Cau Giay district queued in order to pay their last respects to the General.

8:35am: The hearse carrying General Giap’s body stopped at 30 Hoang Dieu Street – the residential home of General Giap in Hanoi.

8:14am: The procession proceeded to Ba Dinh Square.

8am: The procession was followed by thousands of mourners. Many people on Tran Hung Dao Street held up the General’s portrait and cried.

7:40 am: When the coffin was moved off the morgue, tens of thousands of people stood up to see the coffin. All of them cried and shouted loudly the name of the General.

The funeral procession went through major streets in Hanoi including Le Thanh Tong, Trang Tien, Trang Thi, Dien Bien Phu, Ba Dinh Square and his residential home on Hoang Dieu Street, before heading towards Noi Bai airport. It travelled along a 40km route from the national funeral house in downtown Hanoi to the airport.

7:37 am: The coffin covered with a national flag was placed in a hearse with a gun carriage attached.

7:30 am: The ceremony of casket moving began. The General’s remains were moved by pallbearers in military uniform out of the national morgue and were escorted by Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Truong Tan Sang, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

7:25 am: State and Party officials and international guests and representatives of General Giap’s family walked around the coffin of General Giap.

7:17am: Vo Dien Bien, the eldest son of General Giap, on behalf of the General’s relatives conveyed thanks to the State, the army force, hospital staff at Army Hospital 108 where the General received treatment during last days of his life. The son also gave thanks to the Party and the State for creating best conditions for the family to bring his father’s remains to Yen Island in the central province of Quang Binh for burial service in accordance with the General’s wishes.

7:15am: Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong delivered a funeral eulogy in praise of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

7am: Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, announced the beginning of the memorial service for General Vo Nguyen Giap.

The event was attended by high-ranking officials and former officials of the State and the Party Committee, the Army Force, representatives of diplomatic agencies, leaders of foreign delegations, and the General’s relatives.

The memorial service and casket-moving ceremonies for General Vo Nguyen Giap was held at 7am on October 13.
