Vietnam Party leader visits Russia to step up all-around ties

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong led a Vietnamese delegation to Moscow on Sunday for an official visit to Russia with a view to strengthening bilateral cooperation in various fields.

>> Vietnam, Russia to foster comprehensive cooperation The visit, which was made at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was part of Trong’s visit to Russia and Belarus from November 23 to 28. Russian President's Special Representative Igor Morgulov welcomed Trong at Vnukovo airport. The Party chief and his entourage then paid floral tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at the Ho Chi Minh Square in Moscow. He also visited the Hanoi-Moscow Cultural and Trade Center and met with Vietnamese embassy staff and representatives of the local Vietnamese community.

During the visit, the Party chief is scheduled to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and meet with other Russian parliamentary and government leaders with a view to furthering cooperative ties between the two nations in politics, economics, trade, investment, energy, oil and gas, nuclear power, security, and defense.

Trong and Russian leaders are to compare notes on international and regional issues of shared concern and ways to strengthen people-to-people exchange as well as cooperation between localities thereby contributing to a further uplift in the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.

Within the framework of Trong’s visit, Vietnamese Industry and Trade Minister Vu Huy Hoang is scheduled to have a meeting with Andrei Slepnev, Minister of Trade for the Eurasian Economic Commission and chief negotiator of the Customs Union of Russia - Belarus- Kazakhstan.

Earlier on November 15, the 7th strategic dialogue on diplomacy, national defense and security between Vietnam and Russia opened in Ho Chi Minh City.

The event, which was co-chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son and his Russian counterpart Igor V. Morgulov, focused on measures to step up the bilateral relations and exchanged opinions on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Both host and guest pledged to strengthen cooperation in trade as well as national defense and security, and military technologies.
