A memorial monument for Vietnamese and Cambodian soldiers who perished saving Cambodia from genocide was inaugurated in Cambodia’s northeastern province of Stung Treng on Tuesday.  Seated on a 5,000 square meter area on a hill, the monument features Vietnamese and Cambodian soldiers fighting side by side to protect two Cambodian children, according to the Vietnam News Agency. The work was funded by donations of officers and soldiers of Army Corp 15 under the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Tia Banh expresses his thanks for the Vietnamese Government, army and people for supporting Cambodia during its cause of national independence, construction and development. The official said the Cambodian government and people highly appreciated the great role of Vietnamese voluntary soldiers in supporting the Cambodian people in toppling the Khmer Rouge regime and helping the Cambodian army prevent the return of the genocidal regime in 1979-1989. For the interests of the two peoples, the Cambodian army will continue to strengthen cooperation with their Vietnamese counterpart in the future. In addition, he said, local authorities and people along the shared borderline between the two countries will further work together to build a borderline of peace, stability and prosperity.
