A Vietnamese delegation is participating in the 9th ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting (ANCM), which focuses on naval cooperation in maintaining regional maritime security.

Rear Admiral Pham Hoai Nam, Commander of the Vietnam People’s Navy and leader of the Vietnamese delegation, will discuss preparations for an international ship parade to mark 50-year ASEAN in 2017 with representatives of other ASEAN countries, Quan Doi Nhan Dan (People’s Army) newspaper reported.

The agenda of the four-day annual meeting, which kicked off in Myanmar on Wednesday, focuses in the theme of “Fostering ASEAN Naval Teamwork in Regional Maritime Security” and important issues regarding the cooperation between ASEAN naval forces, such as the ANCM Roadmap, regulations on humanitarian and disaster relief assistance, multilateral exercises, anti-piracy measures, and basic concepts on ANCM+.

The navy chiefs have also talked about preparations for the ANCM-10 and increasing exchanges between young naval officials in the bloc.

The ANCM is hosted rotationally by the navy commands of ASEAN member countries.

ASEAN, short for Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a political and economic organization of ten countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
