Incumbent Vietnamese leaders have taken responsibility for the shortcomings seen in national development over the past five years during the ongoing National Assembly meeting.

State President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung presented their reports on Tuesday on the advantages and opportunities as well as challenges and difficulties in socio-economic development and protection of sovereignty.

“The National Assembly will claim responsibility for the existing shortcomings and limitations of the country,” Chairman Hung asserted during his speech at the gathering.

They include the low competitiveness and lack of efficiency in the Vietnamese economy, difficulties in agricultural production, inappropriate budget funding, sluggish economic restructuring, environmental pollution, and compromised food safety, according to the chair.

He also addressed the ineffective anti-corruption measures, complicated progression of criminal activities and social order and new challenges in the defense of the nation’s maritime sovereignty, among others.

The National Assembly chairman pointed out one of the most essential lessons for the country’s legislative body is unified, innovative, democratic, and transparent organization and activity.

“Changing the Party’s leadership over the National Assembly will create an open environment for its members to maximize their knowledge, potential and efficiency,” Hung concluded.

State President Sang, during his presentation, admitted that he was also partially responsible for the country’s unresolved issues related to the political quality, work ethics and expertise of judicial staff.

The state president added that he did not order the government to discuss or figure out solutions to some problems causing public concern.

Regarding the protection of Vietnam’s territorial integrity, Prime Minister Dung said that the government has been consistent in applying firm measures to defend the country’s sovereignty over the East Vietnam Sea, ways which have been supported by the people and the international community.

PM Dung also candidly acknowledged that due to the lack of long-term vision, several socio-economic development objectives were not suitable and that some mechanisms and policies were not feasible.

Among them were the lack of agreement in inflation control, macroeconomic stability and economic growth, as well as limitations in the balancing of the national budget, according to the prime minister.

In addition, the rapidly increasing public debt, the ineffective management of project investments, and the lack of proper resources and policies to cope with these problems have contributed to the country’s economic shortcomings, he added.

Some important lessons were mentioned by PM Dung, including following the directions of the Party, constitution and law, prioritizing the interests of the nation and people, focusing on improving the market economy, and boosting democracy, all of which are hoped to create an environment for sustainable development.

He emphasized the significance of applying measures that are supported by the public to deal with social issues, as well as being based on practical results to evaluate the ability and leadership of authorities.
