A female diplomat has been appointed as head of the Press and Information Department of Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry, becoming the ministry's new spokesperson.

Following the appointment announced on Thursday, Le Thi Thu Hang has become the ministry’s fourth female spokesperson.

Hang replaces Le Hai Binh, now serving as deputy director of the Hanoi-based Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, an institution known for offering undergraduate and graduate training in international relations, law, and economics.

At the ministry’s regular press briefing on Thursday, Binh announced that it was the last time he would chair a press briefing as the ministry’s spokesman and thanked journalists, reporters, and press agencies for their support and cooperation over the years.

After Binh’s remarks, incoming spokesperson Hang expressed her hope that the local and international press will continue to work with the foreign ministry to update the world on information concerning Vietnam, affirming that she is open to opinions from the media on how her office can best serve the country.

Hang spent nearly two decades working in the Press and Information Department before assuming the role of Minister Counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK between 2012 and 2015.

After concluding her tenure in the UK, Hang was appointed acting director and then director of the information and culture department under the ministry’s State Commission for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs.

Hang is the fourth woman to carry the title of spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following in the steps of Ho The Lan, Phan Thuy Thanh and Nguyen Phuong Nga.
