Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has requested Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry to investigate and clarify reports that an Indonesian naval ship shot and wounded two Vietnamese fishermen last week.
Minh made the request during a phone call with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on Friday, underlining that the shooting was a serious incident that did not match the current soundly-developing strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Vietnamese deputy premier said Vietnam is deeply concerned about this incident and called on the Indonesian side to promptly verify and investigate the case.
Indonesia should also inform Vietnam about the investigation result and avoid repeating similar actions in the future, Minh pressed.
The Vietnamese fishing boat in question is coded BD 31153 TS, registered in the south-central province of Binh Dinh.
The Consular Department under the Vietnamese foreign ministry said on July 25 that the BD 31153 TS was pursued and shot at by a foreign ship while they was docking in Con Dao Port in southern Vietnam on July 23, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The shooting left two Vietnamese fishermen wounded. Both of them have been taken to hospital for treatment, the Vietnam News Agency said.
