Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong and over 2,300 guests will take part in the coronation of King Charles III of the United Kingdom on Saturday.

The Vietnamese state leader’s attendance at Britain’s biggest ceremonial event for seven decades showed Vietnam attaches much significance to the partnership with the UK and the relationship with King Charles III, who has actively boosted the bilateral ties.

Vietnam-UK relations get stronger

British Ambassador to Vietnam Iain Frew told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that before the coronation took place, a reception would be organized for all the guests of the British royal family.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and 80 officials of the UK government and parliament will attend the event.

President Thuong’s trip to the UK showed signs of deeper Vietnam-UK friendship, Chairman of the Vietnam-UK Network Mark Kent told the Vietnam News Agency.

Kent, who served as British Ambassador to Vietnam in the 2017-20 tenure, also saw potential for a modern and collaborative relationship between the two countries.

Over the past 50 years of Vietnam-UK diplomatic ties, King Charles III has played a key role in strengthening the two-way relations.

When meeting Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the COP26 summit in November 2021, then Prince Charles III pledged to throw his weight behind the Vietnam-UK cooperation, especially in climate change response, energy transition and green economic development.

As for President Thuong, this is the first time the two leaders have met in their new positions.

The coronation of King Charles III will be organized in a modern way.

The newly crowned King and Queen will ride in a parade from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, the nation’s coronation church to start the ceremony, which is slated at 10:20 am on May 6, or 4:20 pm (local time), and is expected to last for two hours, reported Reuters.

The ceremony will be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Apart from the Vietnamese representative, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Vice President of China Han Zheng, French President Emmanuel Macron, Germany President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the coronation.

The representatives of Japanese, Thai, Spanish and Danish royal families will also participate in the ceremony.
