Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong had a brief meeting with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday on the sidelines of the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, China.
This was the first time State President Thuong had met the UN leader.
The top Vietnamese official is on a visit to China through Friday at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and President of China Xi Jinping.
During the meeting, the Vietnamese state leader highly valued Guterres’ role in and the UN’s contribution to global peace, stability, and security.
Vietnam always throws its weight behind these mutual efforts, he affirmed.
State President Thuong underscored that Vietnam is proactively joining hands with many organizations under the UN to implement numerous projects to advance sustainability, respond to climate change, speed up digitalization, and enhance its participation in keeping peace.
The state president proposed the UN continue helping Vietnam realize international commitments.
The UN secretary-general thanked Vietnam for its cooperation with and support for the UN in all priority aspects, mainly peacekeeping activities, and efforts in maintaining international security, as well as water and food security.
Guterres underlined that Vietnam is a typical model for many developing nations, and is the UN’s key partner.
The UN leader expected Vietnam to further contribute to global governance.
In addition, Guterres said that the UN will accompany Vietnam on its journey of fulfilling commitments to sustainability and response to climate change.

State President Thuong met with his Sri Lankan counterpart Ranil Wickremesinghe on the same day.
Thuong affirmed that Vietnam always cherishes the traditional friendship with Sri Lanka, and expected to deepen the ties.
The top Vietnamese official proposed that the two nations foster bilateral cooperation, especially in tourism, education, training, and people-to-people exchanges, while creating favorable conditions for the two sides' firms to do business in order to drive up two-way trade.
