United Nations (UN) leaders and ambassadors of countries to the UN on Wednesday paid tribute to General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong at the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN in New York, the U.S.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke highly of the Vietnamese Party chief’s leadership, remarking that under the guidance of the Party leader, Vietnam has continued its remarkable development journey and has become an increasingly important partner of the UN.
On behalf of the UN, Guterres extended his deepest condolences to the government and people of Vietnam, and to the family of the Party leader.

President of the 78th UN General Assembly Dennis Francis met with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, and extended his deepest condolences and those of the UN General Assembly to the state and people of Vietnam on the same day.
The head of the UN General Assembly expressed deep condolences over the passing of the dedicated Party leader, acknowledging the great loss suffered by the Vietnamese people due to his wholehearted devotion to the nation.
Ambassador Giang expressed his thanks to Guterres and Francis for their sincere gestures and sentiments toward Party General Secretary Trong.
Giang elaborated that under the leadership of the Party leader, Vietnam has achieved plenty of remarkable milestones on its renewal, development, and international integration journey, making contributions to the UN’s common affairs.
On the same day, Ambassador Anouparb Vongnorkeo, Permanent Representative of Laos and his Chinese counterpart Fu Cong paid homage to and signed the condolence book for Party chief Trong at the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passed away at 1:38 pm on July 19 at the age of 80 at 108 Military Central Hospital in Hanoi despite the efforts of leading doctors and healthcare experts to treat his age-related serious illness.
Vietnam holds a state funeral for him on Thursday and Friday, with flags flying at half-staff at governmental offices and public places all recreational and entertainment activities suspended during the event.
