Chinese Premier Li Qiang will pay an official visit to Vietnam from October 12 to 14 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday.

This will be Li's first official visit to Vietnam since taking office in March 2023, and it will be his first in-person meeting with PM Chinh in Vietnam.

The visit also precedes the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-China diplomatic relations in 2025.

The last visit by a Chinese prime minister to Vietnam was in October 2013.

Li’s upcoming visit takes place amid strong growth in the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, with frequent high-level exchanges between both sides.

In the recent state visit to China by Party General Secretary and State President of Vietnam To Lam in August, both sides issued a joint statement to deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and advance the building of the Vietnam-China community with a shared future of strategic significance.

During his visit, Party leader and President Lam held talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China Zhao Leji, and Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Wang Huning.

In December 2023, Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi paid a state visit to Vietnam, during which both sides agreed to build a Vietnam-China community with a shared future of strategic importance.

In 2024, PM Chinh visited China in June and then-Chairman of Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue made a visit in April.

Many visits and working sessions between Politburo members and Party Central Committee members of both countries have taken place over the past 10 months.

During his reception for newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam He Wei in Hanoi on October 1, PM Chinh suggested China promote cooperation in building standard gauge railway lines connecting the two countries.

The head of the Vietnamese government also called on China to continue opening its doors to Vietnamese agricultural products and to swiftly implement large-scale investment projects that reflect China’s level of development in Vietnam.

Economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Vietnam and China has steadily deepened, becoming a highlight in their bilateral relations over the past years.

China has consistently been Vietnam's largest trade partner and its second-largest export market.

Vietnam is China's largest trade partner in ASEAN and its fifth-largest trade partner globally, after the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and Russia.
