-- 52-year-old Nguyen Nhat, who has an economics PhD and is former Chairman of People’s Committee of Ha Tinh province, has been appointed as new director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, the Ministry of Transports has just announced. Meanwhile, Duong Chi Dung, the administration’s former director, has been recently arrested abroad for his alleged economic offenses when he was board chairman of the state-owned Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) corporation.

-- Vietnam’s VND10,000 and VND20,000 cotton banknotes will be taken out of circulation as of January 1, 2013, according to an announcement by the State Bank of Vietnam.

-- The second conference for overseas Vietnamese, which has a big focus on national unity and traditions, cultural identity, and overseas Vietnamese intellectuals, wrapped up in Ho Chi Minh City on September 28 after two days of sitting.

Sports: 

-- Premier League leaders Chelsea beat London rivals Arsenal 2-1 while Tottenham Hotspur ended their Old Trafford hoodoo and beat Manchester United 3-2 there for the first time since 1989 to leave Chelsea three points clear on Saturday, according to a Reuters report.
