Politics --  Receiving Indian Minister of Shipping G. K. Vasan in Hanoi on May 24, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said the Vietnamese Government always backs collaboration between the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport and Indian Ministry of Shipping, especially in maritime and inland waterways. Dung also hailed the outcomes of talks between Vasan and Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang, saying that agreements reached by the two ministries during Vasan’s visit will make practical contributions to the two countries’ relations.Society -- A fishing boat of central Quang Ngai Province with 15 fishermen on board was scared away and hit by a Chinese ship while it was operating off Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago in the East Sea on May 20, authorities reported. The collision caused damage estimated at VND100 million (US$4,800) to the fishing boat. -- The Department of Overseas Labor Management has said that about 100 Vietnamese nurses will be sent to Japan for work, with income ofVND30-60 million ($2,880) per month, under a comprehensive labor cooperation agreement between Vietnam and Japan. At the same time, about 100 other nurses will be received by Germany. Initial income of those nurses will be VND22-25 million per month and those who get German-granted certificates will be paid up to VND55 million per month. 

-- A man and his wife and their two children were swept away by floodwater in a violent flashflood that occurred in Tam Chung Commune, Muong Lat District, Thanh Hoa Province on Friday afternoon. The body of the man was found last night while rescuers are trying to search for the three other victims. -- Hundreds of fishermen in Duy Hai Commune, Duy Xuyen District, central Quang Nam Province yesterday conducted a solemn funeral service for a large whale that died aftwe being swept ashore two days ago with a serious wound in its belly. The dead fish weighs about 1 ton and is 4 meters long. -- Two students, 12 and 9 years old, of Ho Chon Nhon Primaty School northern Quang Tri Province were drown while bathing in the Cay Cui Lake in on Friday morning. The bodies of the students were recovered later the same day.    Business -- Vietnam’s Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang and Indian Shipping Minister G.K.Vasan signed a bilateral cooperation agreement on shipping and trade in Hanoi on Friday. The 18-clause agreement will strengthen Vietnam-India maritime traffic, promoting two-way economic and commercial exchanges, and generating opportunities for Vietnamese industry to penetrate regional and international maritime markets. -- The national consumer price index (CPI) in May declined by 0.06 percent from last month, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported.  This is the first time since May 2003 that the CPI of May has decreased from the previous month. However, as compared to a year earlier, the index has increased by 6.36 percent, GSO said.Lifestyle -- A grand ceremony to celebrate Lord Buddha’s 2557th birthday was conducted at Quan Su pagoda in Hanoi on Friday. Organized by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS), the event was attended by many Buddhist dignities and followers, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, many other high-ranking officials, representatives of diplomatic corps and international organizations in Vietnam. At the event, Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu delivered a message of the VBS Patriarch to Vietnamese monks, nuns and followers at home and abroad. President Truong Tan Sang and other Party and State leaders sent bouquets to the event.

Sports    -- Borussia Dortmund will face compatriots Bayern Munich in the first ever all-German Champions League final on May 26. AccuScore.com's computer projects Bayern Munich's chances of being crowned European champions at 68 percent. Head to head, Dortmund has won five of the last nine meetings between the clubs, but this season, Bayern broke Dortmund's spell. Bayern faced Dortmund in four matches during the 2012-13 campaign and recorded two wins, two draws and no losses.

-- The Vietnamese women football team crushed their Kyrgyzstan rivals 12-0 in the second match of the Asian Cup qualifying round in Bahrain on May 25. In the first match on May 22, the team also easily defeated underdogs Bahrain 8-0.
