Tourists abandoned in Thailand to be compensated

Travel Life, a travel company, has agreed to compensate 701 people who took a six-day tour to Thailand organized by the firm on June 12 but were abandoned there by its Thai partner.

>> 701 travelers stranded in Thailand: organizer at fault >> 701 Vietnamese travelers abandoned in Thailand Travel Life on Monday held a meeting with the representatives of the travelers who had been sent by the company to Thailand under a tour provided by a Thai company but it later did not made a full payment to its Thai partner -- Thai 2020.

This resulted in a situation in which Thai 2020 refused to serve the travelers, forcing them to survive on their own until they returned to Vietnam on June 17. At the meeting, Nguyen Thi Kim Khanh, director of Travel Life, located in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, sent her apologies to all the affected travelers and said the company will pay VND2.5 million (US$120) to each of the tourists who had departed from the city. As for those who departed from Hanoi, the company will organize a similar meeting with them to discuss compensation rates, Khanh said. Those who had been hospitalized for treatment as a result of the abandonment will be reimbursed with the hospital fee, Khanh promised. For example, during their stay in Thailand, some travelers passed out after hearing the news that they would not be provided air tickets to fly back to Vietnam, Khanh said. Before yesterday’s meeting, the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Culture sent a report to the city People’s Committee and the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism detailing Travel Life's violations of the Law on Tourism. These violations include having no license for international travel operation, not locating its office at the registered office address in its business license, employing tour guides without a practitioner’s certificate, and no reporting on business results related to international travel activities.
