HCMC: 3 Filipinos face dock for swindling foreigners

Police in Ho Chi Minh City have requested the local People’s Procuracy to indict three Filipinos who appropriated money from some foreigners in the city by cheating them in gambling.   Accordingly, Oliver Ingao Due (aka Alex), 45, Cavite Nestor Carmesis (aka Nicolas), also 45, and Tagapan Bartolome Jr. Berbasa (aka Junior, Pio), 47, would be indicted on charges of “swindling to appropriate assets.”

They were arrested in October 2012 after being caught cheating a Japanese man, Naoki, police said, adding that they are hunting for one more foreigner named Ley who has fled away.

Before their arrest, Alex had two wanted notices from the Philippine authorities for attempted murder while Pio also had a wanted notice.

According to the case file, the four swindlers arrived in Vietnam in 2012 and made easy money by cheating others in gambling.

Alex, Nicolas and Pio would get acquainted with their potential victims and then invited them to a house where they lured them to gamble. They then arranged for the victims to gamble with Ley, who would use all possible tricks to cheat the victims of their money.  In October 2012, Alex, Nicolas and Pio befriended Naoki and then invited them to their rented  house at 64/16 Cu Lao, Ward 2, Phu Nhuan District for gambling. Ley later came and asked the Japanese man to play poker with her. Naoki agreed and Ley had arranged for him to win the first four games totaling US$800. Ley then asked Naoki to play the last game worth $5,000 on the condition that both she and the man had to hand that amount as their deposits to Alex, Nicolas and Pio who acted as “referees”. Naoki said he did not have enough money at that time, so Ley said she would leave the house for business and would come back when the man had $5,000 in hand. After Ley left, the three “referees” told Naoki that they would lend him US$2,000 to play the game with Ley. They then took Naoki to an ATM to withdraw VND44 million (about US$2,000) and suggested that they would keep the money for him pending the game. The swindlers later shared the $2,000 among them. A few days later, they asked Naoki to meet them in a place to arrange some more money for playing the game with Ley. When they met at their venue, police, who acted on a tip-off , rushed in and seized the swindlers. Police also seized a large amount of foreign currencies, four packs of playing cards and other items from the three Filipinos.
