Politics:

-- The spokesman of Foreign Ministry, Luong Thanh Nghi, has reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of protecting human rights and improving people’s living standards when answering reporters’ inquiries on the US House of Representatives’ adoption of Vietnam Human Rights Act 2013 (H.R.1897).  

-- Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan has visited and presented gifts to families of victims of Agent Orange/dioxin in the northern mountainous province of Bac Giang as part of activities nationwide to mark 52 years since the beginning of the spraying of Agent Orange/dioxin by the US Army in Vietnam (August 10, 1961-2013).

-- Lao government officials and foreign diplomats have joined the people of Vientiane in a walk to mark the 46th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN).

-- New Zealand’s Governor-General Jerry Mateparae will arrive  in Vietnam on August 3 for a 6-day State-level visit at the invitation of President Truong Tan Sang, his first trip to Vietnam since he took office and the second visit of a New Zealand Governor-General.

Society:

-- Four people were injured, 2 antenna masts and 14 low-tension poles collapsed, 3 houses were destroyed and 223 hectares of rice and farm produce were damaged after typhoon Jebi that packed maximum winds of 102 kph made landfall in Quang Ninh northern province on Aug 3, according to the National Committee of Search and Rescue.

-- A watermarked stamp with Chinese characters found on both sides of the complementary tickets to the finale of Miss Itgo 2013 or Miss Intellectual Vietnam 2013 contest held yesterday in the northern central province of Ha Tinh is raising concern.

-- Police in Vietnam Saturday announced that they have arrested Chinese man Ly Xue Leng and his Vietnamese wife Nong Thi Be for selling two local ethnic minority girls to brothel(s) in China or to Chinese men as wives.

-- An e-learning center at the National Economic Technical College (NETC) has been inaugurated as part of a cooperation program with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Samsung Electronic Vietnam (SEV).

-- Some 500 among some 1,400 illegal labor migrants, most of whom Vietnamese nationals, have been sent to a tent camp in Moscow while waiting for deportation for violating immigration rules.

Business:

-- Local fuel wholesalers are trumpeting that they are bearing a loss of VND500 for every liter of sold A92 gasoline, though the world oil price has just witnessed a steep decline -- a normal move when they want to hike the retail prices ‘to cover losses’.

-- HongKong – China Group Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing has - for the fourth time - asked for a deadline extension to the construction of its US$1.2 billion paper complex in southern Vietnam’s Hau Giang province, and then is allowed to extend the deadline of the construction of its plant in southern Vietnam by the end of 2014.

-- A seminar has been held in Chennai city of the India state of Tamil Nadu to promote trade ties between Vietnam and India with the participation of Vietnamese Trade Counsellor Nguyen Son Ha who provided the participants with information about the Vietnamese economy, and bilateral trade and investment ties between Vietnam and India.

-- Bright prospects are visible in Vietnam-South Africa trade and investment cooperation, said Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa Le Huy Hoang in a recent interview with the Vietnam News Agency correspondents on the occasion of the upcoming visit of Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and the 20th anniversary of Vietnam-South Africa diplomatic ties (1993-2013).
