The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) reported that super typhoon Haiyan has changed direction and will lie centered at the coastal region of north- central Quang Binh – Thanh Hoa provinces by 7pm tonight, Nov 10.
At 9am on Nov 10, the typhoon was centered around 190km off the coast of central Quang Nam and Quang Tri provinces, with gusts as strong as 134-166 km/hour.
NCHMF forecast that in the next 12 hours, the storm will be moving west by northwest and northwest in parallel with the coasts of mid-central provinces at speeds of 30-35km per hour.
By 7pm the same day, the typhoon will be centered over the seawaters of Quang Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces, with gusts blowing at 103-133km/hour.
Within the next 12 to 24 hours, the storm is likely to switch direction and move between northwest and north by northwest at velocities of some 20km/hour. It will make landfall in Thanh Hoa province and move along the northern coast.
By 7am Nov 11, the typhoon will have its center above the southern region of the northern delta. Gusts are forecast to blow at 62-74km/hour.
By 4pm Nov 11, the storm will be centered above the northeastern provinces, with winds estimated at 61-74km/hour.
Within the next 36-48 hours, the storm will likely change direction and move north by northeast at speeds of some 15km/hour. There’s also likelihood that the storm will weaken into a tropical low depression.
By 4am Nov 12, the tropical low depression is forecast to have its center on the Vietnam-China border, with winds slowing down to 39-49km/hour.
Within the next 48 to 72 hours, the depression is predicted to move mostly in the northeastern direction at 15km/hour and gradually weaken into a low-pressure area.
The mid-central region will see medium rain and downpours, and then the north central and northern regions will also have rain and downpours in several areas.
According to Da Nang and Hoi An authorities, as Haiyan didn’t make direct landfall on central provinces, local governments will allow some 500,000 evacuators to return home and resume daily activities by noon today, Nov 10.
However, locals at Cu Lao Cham and Ly Son islands in the central Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces are still forced to stay put at their shelter places and can only return home when the gusts lessen.
