Politics -- At her reception held on Friday for the outgoing Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Hoang Vinh Thanh, Governor-General of Australia Quentin Bryce said she is delighted at the strong development of comprehensive relations between Vietnam and her country over the last 40 years. According to statistics, two-way trade between Vietnam and Australia increased to AU$6 billion in 2013 from AU$3.3 billion in 2009.

Society -- Southern Tay Ninh Province Veterinary Sub-department is considering declaring an epidemic of the H5N1 avian flu in a number of localities of the province, where more than 2,000 ducks have been culled after they were found infected with the H5N1 virus. Meanwhile, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization on Friday warned that the H7N9 avian flu that is raging in China can spread to its neighboring countries.  -- Along with Hanoi and Lao Cai, Son La and Yen Bai provinces, Ho Chi Minh City is also being affected by measles, with more than 100 children hospitalized for the disease from early this year, local health authorities reported.  Two children, one in Hanoi and one in Yen Bai, have recently died of the disease.

-- A serious accident between a car and a truck occurred  on National Highway 1 in Bo Trach District, central Quang Binh Province on Friday morning, killing three people and injuring four others. They were all in the car. These seven victims, of the same family, were on the way to return to Quang Binh from northern Phu Tho Province, where they had visited their relatives on the past Tet (Lunar New Year). 

-- The Market Management Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade has set up a hot line, 1900 585826, to receive information related to food hygiene and safety. This is the operator number, so after dialing it, the callers will be instructed to dial the phone numbers of the local market departments they want to contact.  -- Northern provinces are suffering a cold weather as a cold front has affected the region from Friday night, while the southern region is experiencing a cool weather, with temperatures between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius in the morning and nighttime. These weather patterns will continue in several days, the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center reported. Business -- The first McDonald’s restaurant in Vietnam was inaugurated at 2-6 bis Dien Bien Phu Street in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City on Friday. The restaurant, which has 350 seats, will operate around the clock starting 10 am today, February 8, said Good Day Hospitality JSC, a Vietnamese company that has been franchised to develop the McDonald’s brand in Vietnam.Sports -- The 2014 Winter Olympic Games kicked off on Friday night, February 7, at Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia, in an impressive ceremony that was attended by 40,000 people. Russian President Vladimir Putin and about 65 leaders of other countries and international organizations were present at the ceremony.
