A 34-year-old woman in north-central Ha Tinh Province has had a 4-cm surgical needle removed from her abdomen after it was carelessly left there by local doctors during an operation on her uterus nine years ago.
Nguyen Thi Hoa, a resident in Xuan Loc commune, Can Loc District, was hospitalized to the Can Loc General Hospital on November 4 after she had suffered a pain inside her abdomen for nine years.
Doctors gave the woman an X-ray test and said that there could be a surgical needle in her belly and that another X-ray should be made for confirmation.
Hoa them arrived at the Cua Dong Hospital in central Nghe An province on November 5 for another X-ray test that clearly showed a curved needle inside her abdomen, in the location where doctors at Can Loc Hospital performed an emergency surgery on her uterus that was ruptured nine years ago, when she was six months into pregnancy.
The operation saved her but could not keep the fetus.
Hoa then returned to the Can Loc Hospital on November 7, showing that X-ray film to doctors there.
After looking at the film, Dr. Nguyen Duc Ngoc, deputy director of Can Loc Hospital and Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Chung, head of the Obstetrics Department told the woman that she needed to undergo a surgery to remove the needle.
The operation was later conducted and the needle, about 4 cm long, was taken out.
Hoa’s husband, Dau Quoc Tien, 40, told news website VietNamNet that it was none other than Dr. Ngoc and Dr. Chung who performed the operation on Hoa’s uterus in October 10, 2005.
In talking with Tuoi Tre, Dr. Ngoc admitted that he performed an emergency surgery on Hoa about nine years ago.
