Politics:

-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Lao counterpart have agreed to conclude negotiations soon on a new bilateral trade agreement between the two countries to look toward the target of US$2 billion in trade in 2015.

-- The National Assembly yesterday passed a decision to add a court of the senior grade to the nation’s judicial system. Vietnam will thus have the Supreme People’s Court, the Senior People’s Court, provincial or municipal People’s Courts, and district-level People’s Courts.

Society:

-- Da Lat University in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong yesterday received a nuclear reactor simulator called the OPR 1000 Core Simulator, donated by South Korea.

-- Ho Chi Minh City will spend VND263 billion ($12.6 million) from now till 2020 on literacy classes for 21,000 people and train 74,000 more after they have finished these classes.

-- The Government Inspectorate has confirmed that the local authorities of the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai violated regulations on land and forest management, causing a loss of thousands of hectares of land and 31,500 cubic meters of wood.

-- Police in the central province of Nghe An yesterday arrested Tran Le Duc, 35, for making chips to cheat local filling stations out of fuel. Fifteen other people were involved in this scam.

-- Airlines in Vietnam will close check-in at all local airports ten minutes earlier than before – 40 minutes for domestic flights and 50 minutes for international flights prior to departure.

-- Science, technology, and innovation in Vietnam are now at a low level, according to a report by the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Business:

-- Vietnam has announced that it had granted a license for Samsung Electronics Vietnam for its additional $3 billion investment in the second stage of the firm’s high-tech complex in the northern province of Thai Nguyen.

-- Kon Tum Bellest, a South Korea-invested company, has been permitted to develop a $3 million high-tech agricultural project in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum.

-- The consumer price index of Vietnam decreased 0.27 percent in November.

Sports:

-- The Vietnamese national football team are looking for an emphatic victory over Laos in their match today in Hanoi in Group A of the 2014 Southeast Asian Football Championship, or AFF Suzuki Cup. In the previous match three days ago, Vietnam were held to a 2-2 draw against Indonesia.
