A monument to Vietnamese heroic mothers, the country’s largest of its kind, is now open to the public in a central province.

The People’s Committee of Quang Nam Province in the central region on Tuesday inaugurated the Heroic Mothers’ Monument in An Phu Ward in Tam Ky, the province’s capital.

The structure and its vicinity cover an area of 15 hectares and cost VND410 billion (US$19.11 million) to construct.

The monument alone towers 18.37 meters and is 117 meters wide at its largest point.

The construction is shaped like a mountain which protrudes in its central part and slopes toward the two sides.

At the heart of the monument is a bust modeled after Nguyen Thi Thu, a revered heroic mother who lost her husband, nine sons, one son-in-law, and two grandsons in wartime.

Thu lived in the province before passing away in 2010 in the central city of Da Nang.

Her bust is symbolic of nearly 50,000 heroic mothers across the country.

Inside the monument is a commemorative house which is home to inscriptions of all the nearly 50,000 heroic mothers, and photos and writings on their lives and their silent yet massive sacrifices to the country’s quest for independence.

Work on the structure began in July 2009.
