Politics -- Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan and visiting Mayor of Leipzig Burkhard Jung signed a memorandum of understanding on establishing cooperative relations between the two localities at their meeting in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday. Accordingly, the two cities will cooperate in the fields of heath care, environment technology and energy, sustainable urban development, science, education, socio-culture and sports.

Society -- Vietnamese-American Hollywood star Maggie Q., who arrived in Vietnam on Thursday to take part in a campaign to call on Vietnamese to protect rhino as well as other endangered wild animal species, spoke at a press conference on Friday that she almost does not believe that Vietnam is considered the world’s largest market for consumption of rhino horns. -- Only 30 percent of the total number of drug addicts without stable residence in Ho Chi Minh City has been detected, although competent agencies have sent more than 2,000 drug addicts to drug detoxification centers, Major General Phan Anh Minh, deputy director of the city Police Department said at a meeting with the local People’s Committee on Friday.  -- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said at a conference held in southern Hau Giang province on Friday that he agreed to extend the program to build stable and safe houses for people in areas vulnerable to floods and landslides in the Mekong Delta region to 2020, as 8,410 families there have yet to have such houses so far.  -- A man in the central province of Quang Nam on Friday captured a 30-kg crocodile that suddenly appeared on National Highway 1 in Thang Binh District, terrifying local residents. The man later sold the animal, which is 1.5 meter long, to a person for VND1 million (US$46.4).Business -- Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Foreign-Invested Enterprises Nguyen Mai suggested that the Government should lower import duty on automobile parts to support domestic automobile assemblers. The suggestion came following the fact that the Toyota Motor Vietnam has said it is considering suspending automobile production using imported parts and switching to import complete cars to enjoy the preferential tax a trade pact will offer in the next three years. -- The People’s Committee of the central city of Da Nang has asked local tax authorities to coordinate with concerned agencies to strengthen inspections at major hotels and resorts to detect and handle cases of tax invasion.Lifestyle -- As many as 100  paintings featuring the 40th anniversary of reunification of Vietnam (1975-2015) and the late President Ho Chi Minh’s 125th birthday (May 19) are on display at an exhibition that opened at the 23/9 Park in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday. The event, which will last until April 14, is jointly held by the municipal People’s Committee and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.Sports -- Arsenal will compete with Burnley in a match in the 32th round of the Premier League at 11:30 pm on Saturday, April 11 (Vietnam time). According to observers, Arsenal will easily defeat their weaker rivals tonight.
