-- Phan Thi Hai, deputy chief of the department on smoking and health under the Ministry of Health, said the ministry has proposed regulations on limiting or banning smoking from wedding parties or funerals.

-- Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper has so far received more than VND55 billion (US$2.56 million) from donors since it launched a campaign to raise funds for the protection of Vietnam’s sovereignty in the East Vietnam Sea on May 10, 2014. The campaign was kick-started immediately after China’s illegal deployment of the Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig to Vietnamese waters last year.

-- The Vietnam Journalists Association in collaboration of the German KAS Institute in Vietnam organized a workshop on exploring the advantages and limiting the negative sides of the interaction between media and social networks.

Education

-- During the last seven months, a group of students from the south-central province of Khanh Hoa have sought for funding from domestic and foreign sources to run playgrounds for children across Vietnam in hopes that “they will not stick their eyes on games and the Internet anymore.” They have so far created six such playgrounds.

-- Vietnam has recently ranked 12th in the France-based Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s latest global school rankings, followed by the U.K. The rankings were based on math and science scores of 15-year-olds in 76 countries. The study is expected to be presented at the World Education Forum in South Korea next week.
