-- At his talks with Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang in Hanoi on Friday, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concerns over the increasing tensions in the East Vietnam Sea, saying he hopes the parties involved will address disputes peacefully in line with the UN Charter and international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He wished that ASEAN countries and China will reach the Code of Conduct in the East Vietnam Sea (COC) soon, adding that the UN will support this process if the involved parties propose.

-- U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter is scheduled to visit Vietnam at the end of May, the Press Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, Lisa B. Wishman, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Friday. During the visit, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter will discuss military cooperation with Vietnamese officials, U.S. Ambassador to Hanoi Ted Osius said in an interview with Bloomberg on Thursday.

-- Vietnamese police are preparing to hand over to their Chinese counterparts 24 Chinese suspects who had arrived in Vietnam and then cheated people living in China of their money by posing as Chinese prosecutors, court officials or police officers while contacting them and threatening them over the phone.  They were arrested in Districts 5 and 11 in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday.

-- A three-year-old girl died of the hand, foot and mouth disease in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on Tuesday after five days of infection, the local health authorities reported on Friday. The girl developed the disease symptoms after contacting another child who had been infected with the disease.

-- Every year Vietnam has 100,000-150,000 new cancer patients and 70,000 deaths of the disease, a research group from the Ho Chi Minh City-based Military Hospital 175 reported at a conference held in the city on Friday. Improper diets are responsible for 30-50 percent of the total number of cancer cases, a doctor said at the event, citing a recent study of the Union for International Cancer Control.

-- Authorities of the central city of Da Nang on Friday issued a notice for recruitment for the post of director of the Department of Construction. Candidates must be university graduates in one of the following fields: construction, architect, construction materials, construction machinery, technical infrastructure, urban environment, and urban management.

-- The Malaysian Ministry of Industry and International Trade has began to investigate the anti-dumping suit over cold rolled stainless steel imported from Vietnam and eight other countries and territories, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said on Friday. The plaintiff in the suit is Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd, which has claimed that the dumping rate was 27 percent.    

-- Japan’s Hitachi Zosen Corporation has submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee three garbage treatment projects with a total investment of US$80 million. Of these, the refuse burning power generation project worth $70 million has been approved in principle by the authorities, and the Japanese investor is choosing a location for the project.

-- A collection of “áo dài” (Vietnamese traditional dress) created by Vietnamese designer Thuan Viet is scheduled to be featured in a special show at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the U.S., today, May 23.

-- The Vietnamese football squad will compete with their Thai rivals in their first match in the qualification round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, May 24. Thai coach Kiatisak Senamuang told Tuoi Tre (youth) newspaper on Friday that this will be a hard game for his team.
