Politics -- At a meeting held in Hanoi on Friday with young Vietnamese scientists whose outstanding achievements have been recognized nationally and internationally, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung praised their great contributions to the country’s social and economic development, and pledged to continue giving favorable conditions for them to develop their talent and creativity.Society -- A large explosion happened in a house on Ton Duc Thang Street in Dong Da District, Hanoi at around 6:30 pm on Friday, killing a 59-year-old man and injuring three others, local police said, adding they are investigating to identify the cause of the blast. -- At an appealing hearing on Friday, the Supreme People’s Court in Hanoi upheld the 19-year sentence for Nguyen Manh Tuong, a former doctor at the Bach Mai Hospital and director of Hanoi-based Cat Tuong Beauty Salon, for throwing the body of a female patient into the Hong (Red) River after she died during a botched surgery at the salon in October 2013. -- As of October 1, the Vietnam Railways Corporation will kick off a plan to sell tickets for passengers who want to travel by train during the upcoming Tet (Lunar New Year) that will fall on February 8, 2016.  The company expects to transport around 12,000 passengers per day in a one-month period, from January 25 to February 25, 2016.  -- A public satisfaction assessing system, which uses 32-inch touch screens, will be put into operation at state administrative agencies in all districts of Ho Chi Minh City in October this year, according to a plan of the municipal Department of Information and Communications that has been approved by the city People’s Committee.  Business -- Customs officers at the Cat Lai Port in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday detected a large volume of smuggled functional foods hidden in one of the two containers of goods imported from the U.S. by a city-based company – My Investment, Production, and Import-Export Co., Ltd. -- The Japanese contractors of the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line system in Ho Chi Minh City will train about 400 engineers and technician workers in using the Japanese technologies that will be used for operating the line, the first of its kind in the city, which is under construction and expected to be put into operation in 2020.
