Driving license applicants in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang will have to attend a mandatory ethical course under a new regulation taking effect next year, a local traffic police officer said Friday.

The city’s traffic police unit had called on the municipal administration to mandate such a course in the process of applying for a driving license, and has recently got approval for the proposal, Colonel Le Ngoc said at a traffic safety conference.

Ngoc is the head of the traffic police office under the Da Nang Police Department.

The ethics course is intended to train driving license seekers with a proper form of conduct for traffic-related issues, according to the Da Nang traffic police unit.

The course will be offered by drivers’ training centers operated by the local traffic police, Col. Ngoc said.

The course will help people improve the awareness of compliance with traffic rules as well as the sense of supporting others who suffer accidents or other problems in traffic, he added.  

Next week the office will work with the city’s Department of Transport to set up a specific ethics-training program for driving license applicants, Col. Ngoc said.   

He also informed that the traffic safety in the city has recently improved remarkably, as the police force has tightened their traffic controls under a direction issued by municipal Party Committee secretary Nguyen Xuan Anh on November 6.

According to a report of the National Traffic Safety Committee, nearly 7,200 people died from traffic accidents across the country in the ten-month period ending on October 15, 2015, down almost 3.9 percent year on year.

Approximately 24 people are killed and over 60 suffer from permanent injuries in accidents on the roads of Vietnam each day, causing pain and loss for hundreds of families, Vietnamese Minister of Transport said at the requiem held in the northern province of Nam Dinh on November 7 to commemorate road traffic victims.
