What you need to know in Vietnam today:


-- Vietnamese military officials have had a get-together to review the lessons learned from battling against Chinese invasion in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago on January 19, 1974 and the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago in 1988.


-- Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has ordered the Ministry of Public Security and relevant agencies to soon simplify administrative formalities and build a database for population management.

-- Officials of the Ministry of Finance have given back gifts worth a total of VND300 million (US$13,300) in the last nine years in a move to support the national anti-corruption program in Vietnam.

-- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has agreed to provide VND1.7 billion ($76,000) to a program to encourage mothers to breastfeed their infants in Vietnam.

-- Work began on the construction of a VND2.5 trillion (US$111 million) hospital in the southern province of Binh Phuoc on Monday.

-- A fishing boat from the central province of Quang Ngai was attacked on January 14 by a Chinese fishing ship when it was in the waters 90 nautical miles from Da Nang City and to the north of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago. The ramming caused damage estimated at VND200-300 million ($9,000-13,300) to the local ship.

-- Fifty-eight road accidents happened in the southern province of Dong Nai in 2015, killing 53 people, due to a lack of traffic posts and markings.


-- Samsung Electronics Vietnam is planning to provide new services to repair and refurbish mobile phones and tablets for foreign partners in Vietnam.

-- Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta will open eight more shops selling safe farming products during the Lunar New Year festival, which will come in around two weeks.

-- Ho Chi Minh City will have 128 flower markets during the Lunar New Year festival.

-- Vinaphone, one of the major mobile phone service operators in Vietnam, launched its pilot telecommunication network program to provide 4G service on Phu Quoc Island and Ho Chi Minh City.
