A Vietnamese woman who gave birth mid-air has been reunited along with her son with his unlikely ‘godmother,’ the foreign doctor who helped her deliver him during a flight on Friday last week.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Nga, 26, and her newborn son Xuan Dang, whom she named after the captain of the flight, were reunited on Monday at the Hospital for Women and Children in the central city of Da Nang with British doctor Fiona Sutton Julia, the passenger who helped Nga gave birth to her child in the middle of their flight.

At around 10:00 am, Julia arrived at the infirmary with her two friends and met with the four aircrew members who had also assisted during the delivery. The group were then escorted to the 11^th floor of the hospital to meet Nga and her newborn boy.

As soon as Julia spotted Nga sitting next to her sleeping son on the bed, the British doctor rushed toward the family and held Nga in her arms with tears in her eyes.

“I am very grateful to her. Thanks to her help during our difficult moment, my son and I are both healthy. I have wanted to express my gratitude to the doctor since I was taken to the hospital,” Nga said while shedding some tears, asking one of the flight attendants to translate.

Julia then held the Vietnamese woman tightly, saying that Nga was a brave and extraordinary mother.

Holding the newborn baby in her arms, the British doctor said she had been very excited to be reunited with Nga and her son since that unforgettable moment, and was really happy to see that both of them were in good shape.

Julia told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that she came to Vietnam on March 2 and had visited Ho Chi Minh City.

After helping deliver Nga’s baby during her flight to Da Nang, Julia continued her journey and headed to neighboring Hoi An City.

Being able to help a woman give birth to her child on the plane has made her first trip to Vietnam a surprising and interesting experience, Julia said, adding that she had never imagined such circumstances though she herself is a pediatrician.

On the same morning, a representative of Jetstar Pacific, the low-cost airline Nga traveled with, offered flowers and gifts to the family, along with free airline tickets for the newborn baby until he is 20 years old.

Nga gave birth to her son on a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang some 10,000 meters above the ground on March 4.

The woman and her husband decided to travel to their hometown by air, as the couple also had a 19-month-old baby while their second child was due on March 26.

Her waters broke 15 minutes after the flight took off and Julia managed to help the woman deliver her baby mid-air.

The flight landed at around 4:15 pm at Da Nang International Airport in order for Nga and her baby to be brought to hospital for further care.
