Le Van Luong, deputy head of the provincial police department, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper the death outside the jail of the 44-year-old inmate.
Dinh had been sentenced to eight months behind bars for gambling at Kim Chi prison in Chi Linh District, and it was not immediately clear why he was at his house and apparently killed himself there on Monday, according to officers.
“We have requested managers of the Kim Chi prison to report about the incident,” Bui Ngoc Phi, head of the Hai Duong police department, told Tuoi Tre.
Duong died at around 1:30 am on Monday, with murder ruled out as a cause of death, according to autopsy results.
Dinh began his sentence at Kim Chi prison, managed by the province's police department, on November 12, 2015 and had reportedly fled the jail.
“The prison told us that Dinh had escaped, and they were notified of his death at home when they were still searching for the inmate,” Phi, the province’s police head, said.
“We are verifying the information.”
