-- Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed a letter of protest on Thursday to the Embassy of China in Hanoi against Beijing’s operation of a lighthouse on Xubi (Subi) Reef, which is a part of the Vietnamese Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.

-- Thailand’s Navy captured five Vietnamese fishing vessels and 37 fishermen aboard on Tuesday, claiming that the ships were intruding into Thailand’s exclusive economic zone, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

-- Newly-elected Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc promised to battle corruption and wastefulness in the country during his speech to take office on Thursday.

-- Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, deputy chief of office of the Party Central Committee, has been nominated for the position of Vice State President.

-- Closed-circuit television (CCTV) has proven to be an effective tool for curbing crime in Ho Chi Minh City, municipal police said, announcing its plan to install surveillance cameras on every corner of the city.

-- An 11-year-old boy was kidnapped and murdered in Vietnam’s south-central province of Binh Thuan by a man close to his family, police said on Thursday.

-- About 57 percent of Vietnamese high school students like “befriending” their teachers on Facebook, while only 45 percent of teachers behave the same way, according to a recent survey by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

-- The International Student Science Forum 2016 kicked off on Thursday at the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City, welcoming 100 delegates from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, China, and Japan.
