-- Laotian Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith joined talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi on Sunday morning, part of his official visit to Vietnam from May 15 to 17.

-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, along with a delegation of high-ranking officials, is scheduled to leave Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on Monday morning for Moscow, on an official visit to Russia.

Society

-- Investors of the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, have announced that renovation works began on Sunday.

-- The People’s Committee in Ho Chi Minh City has approved a project on flood control with a total investment estimated at over VND9.5 trillion (US$425.6 million), borrowed from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) under the World Bank.

-- Than Van Ngo, 26, was stabbed to death following an argument after a road accident happened between him and two other young men in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City, on Sunday afternoon.

-- Three people in the south-central province of Phu Yen were killed in an explosion on Saturday afternoon after the victims attempted to saw a mortar shell to collect gun powder and scrap.

-- Police in the northern city of Hai Phong are investigating a case in which an 11-year-old girl was purportedly sexually assaulted and murdered. The victim was found naked and dead in her front yard with blood on her body.

-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Sunday ordered the Ministry of Industry and Trade to carry out inspection and assertively eliminate ineffective investment projects, in an effort to alleviate wastefulness and contribute to environmental protection.  

Education

-- Six third-year students majoring in marine science at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport are scheduled to participate in a free-of-charge internship in South Korea. The students were chosen after being interviewed by representatives of the Korean Institute of Maritime and Fishery Technology.
