Have a nice Sunday!

Society

-- Leaders of health and agriculture departments in the central province of Quang Tri have yet to reach a consensus on whether to allow phenol, a highly toxic substance, to be used in food after samples of frozen mackerel taken from a seafood trade facility in Vinh Linh District had been found containing the toxin on Friday.

-- An agriculture official in Anh Son District in the north-central province of Nghe An said on Saturday that the department had reported the death of a gayal weighing almost one metric ton. The carcass of the animal, which showed no sign of being killed, was discovered in a strip of protective forests by locals on Wednesday.

-- A concrete floor at a construction site in Vung Tau City, a coastal resort town located approximately 120 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, gave way without warning on Saturday morning, killing two female workers working underneath and injuring another.

-- On early Saturday morning, a gang of four masked men riding in a car stopped a 28-year-old man after a chase in Pho Yen Town in the northern province of Thai Nguyen. The gang chopped the man’s left hand off and slashed another whom he was carrying behind on his bike in the leg.

-- Police in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, said on Saturday that they are investigating a taxi robbery attempted by a 38-year-old Vietnamese-American man, who had jumped into the cab after being taken by his relatives to a hospital for treatment for his finger injury. The suspect managed to push the cab driver out of the automobile before driving off to an intersection in District 10, dumping the cab there and walking away.

Business

-- According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam spent nearly US$278 million importing fruits and vegetables within the first five months of 2016, up by 48 percent compared to the same period last year. Fruit imports from the U.S., Canada, Australia and Thailand have knocked out their Chinese counterparts, most of which are of unclear origin and contain toxic chemicals, at local supermarkets and produce shops.

-- Owners of start-ups and small and medium businesses operating in environmentally-friendly, clean produce showcased their products at a market session taking place on Saturday on the University of Technology campus in Ho Chi Minh City.

Sports

-- Many diplomats from European countries joined a friendly soccer match with officials of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former local star footballers on Saturday in Hanoi. The match was organized by the European Union (EU) delegation to Vietnam to share the excitement and thrills brought by Euro 2016, which is running in France.
