-- Five people in the northern Vietnamese province of Hai Duong were killed after a lime kiln collapsed at around 2:00 pm on Sunday.

-- The ship CSB 2013 of the Vietnam Coast Guard successfully rescued a fishing boat and its 10 crew members after its engine broke down off the north-central province of Quang Tri on Saturday, Colonel Tran Van Dung, commissar of the 2nd Regional Command, said on Sunday afternoon.

-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc ordered severe punishment upon those who destroy natural forests during a working session with leaders in Kon Tum Province, located in the Central Highlands, on Sunday morning.

-- Colonel Ho Tu Dien, deputy chief of the Border Guard in Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta, affirmed on Sunday afternoon that two officers were still being held hostage by the operators of illegal fishing boats. The hostages were tasked with inspecting their operations on Saturday evening.

-- The former chairman of the People’s Committee in the southern city of Vung Tau, Phan Hoa Binh, and his previous deputy, Nguyen Thanh Son, were arrested on Sunday morning after police officers discovered they were involved in several violations during their time in office.

Business

-- Litchi farmers in the northern province of Bac Giang, who adopt the GlobalGAP model, have gained profit worth up to hundreds of millions of dong (VND100 million = US$4,484) after exporting the fruit to the United States.

-- Children six years old and above will be allowed to use an automated teller machine (ATM) card after a new regulation promulgated by the State Bank of Vietnam takes effect on August 15.

-- According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, the country’s catfish exports topped $650.3 million in the first five months of 2016, up 5.5 percent year-on-year, with the United States being the largest market.

-- Students in Vietnam are scheduled to begin their fourth day of the national high school examination today, with the history test taken in the morning.
