Society

-- A search and rescue ship from the Vung Tau Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (Vung Tau MRCC) on Thursday brought Filipino crew member Baroma Edmudo from the Nave Cetus vessel cruising from Mexico to Singapore to the southern Vietnamese city of Vung Tay for emergency aid. Earlier, the Vung Tau MRCC received the vessel’s request for help.

-- Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has recently released a warning of the possibility of a heavy rain in the region from the northern provinces to Thua Thien-Hue Province. Rainfall could reach 400-500mm.

-- Plans for expanding Tan Son Nhat International Airport and its surrounding road system have been drafted after Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung inspected the airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday.

-- An explosion occurred at the spot where 13 wooden tourist boats of Mien Tay Tourism Ltd. Co. were anchored on the Tien River in the southern province of Ben Tre, sinking seven of them. No casualties were reported and damages may top VND4 billion (US$178,571).

-- Police in Da Nang will consult the People’s Committee before issuing a ban on selling beer and alcohol after 10:00 pm.

-- Revenue from medical equipment sales in Vietnam has reached US$1.2 billion so far this year, and could top $1.8 billion in 2018, Hua Doan Phu, deputy chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Medical Equipment Association said on Thursday.

-- The People’s Committee of the southern province of Ca Mau has recently agreed to invest more than VND58 billion ($2.59 million) in local education, including repairing 850 run-down classrooms.

-- The Hanoi University of Science and Technology is ranked No. 1 in Vietnam in the field of research and innovation, according to rankings by SCImago Research Group, a Spain-based research organization.

-- ‘Long Thanh will Lachen,’ a report on a Vietnamese little boy suffering from Agent Orange, is among eight nominations in the Emmy Award’s Television and International News category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recently announced.
