A high school teacher in Vietnam has recovered from a coma that resulted from hundreds of wasp stings, though the educator is still suffering heart and liver failure.

Pham Thi Tu Trinh, 43, is now conscious but cannot speak, her husband, Tran Minh Thuan, said Wednesday.

Trinh, a literature teacher at Phu Quoc High School on Phu Quoc Island, a tourist retreat off the southern coast, is in intensive care at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

Doctors said her blood and kidneys are being purified to discharge the wasp venom from her body.

Trinh will undergo treatment for her heart and liver failure if the purification goes as planned, doctors added.

The trade union at Phu Quoc High School is raising funds to support Trinh and local parents and students are following suit.

Trinh was in a critical condition and fell into a deep coma after being stung 100 times by wasps on Sunday on her way to a national solidarity festival on Phu Quoc, administered by Kien Giang Province.

She was approaching a road in Suoi Da Hamlet, Duong To Commune at 7:30 am when the swarm attacked.

The teacher was immediately admitted to Phu Quoc District Hospital and transferred to Cho Ray at 2:00 pm the same day where she has since been in treatment for liver, kidney, and heart failure.

She could not breathe herself at the time of admission so doctors put her on a ventilator.
