Doctors at a hospital in the Mekong Delta city of CanTho can rest easy knowing they have saved a patient suffering cardiac and respiratory arrest brought about by a heart attack.

A team of medical practitioners at the Can Tho Central General Hospital managed to save T.N.H., 58, from the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang, after cardiac and respiratory arrest left him unconscious, the infirmary confirmed on Wednesday.

According to H.’s family, the patient was en route to the hospital for sudden chest pain when his heart stopped beating.

H. was first admitted to a private clinic in Soc Trang, where doctors were able to revive his heart after 30 minutes of CPR and electrical cardioversion.

The man, still comatose and breathing with a ventilator, was then transferred to the Soc Trang General Hospital and later to the Can Tho Central General Hospital.

Following an urgent consultation, doctors at the infirmary diagnosed H. with acute myocardial infarction which led to unconsciousness and multiple-organ failure, and decided to place a stent to his coronary artery.

After 20 days of intensive treatment, H.’s condition stabilized and the man was able to regain consciousness, walk, and eat normally.

Two other patients are also in recovery at the infirmary after being saved by doctors from similar episodes of cardiac arrest brought on by heart attacks.

According to Tran Van Trieu, a cardiologist at the Can Tho Central General Hospital, acute myocardial infarction is common in older men with a long history of cigarette and alcohol consumption, and those who suffer high blood pressure and obesity.

It is advisable for patients to go to the nearest hospital if they experience sudden pain in their chests, shoulders and arms, accompanied by difficulty breathing, nausea, and dizziness, Dr. Trieu stated.
