An officer stationed in the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago was transported on Monday to Ho Chi Minh City on a seaplane to receive emergency treatment for his life-threatening health condition.
The seaplane DHC6 carrying Major Nguyen Van Lam, who is an information assistant at the airfield in Truong Sa, landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in the southern city at around 11:00 am.
Maj. Lam suffered severe stomach pain on Sunday night and was later diagnosed with acute pancreatitis at a local infirmary, which is not fully equipped to promptly improve his poor condition.
The officer was transported to Ho Chi Minh City the following morning aboard the DHC6, which was scheduled to bring a working delegation of 15 people back to the mainland.

Several seats on the aircraft had to be removed in order to create space for the major and his doctors.
Upon his arrival at the southern airport, the officer was transferred onto an ambulance and later admitted to the 175 Military Hospital, located in Go Vap District.
Maj. Lam is in stable health now.
