-- Many car registration offices in Vietnam have been overwhelmed by the increasing number of automobile buyers ahead of the Lunar New Year.

-- The central government has approved a proposal to establish a national medicine sales center, which will be under the management of the Ministry of Health.

-- Public debt in Vietnam has been rising three times faster than the country’s economic growth in the past five years, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said during a conference on Friday.

-- According to Phung Quoc Hien, vice-chairman of the law-making National Assembly, competent agencies are still unable to control the quality of about 10 million slaughterhouses across Vietnam.

-- A three-year-old boy hailing from Ho Chi Minh City was repatriated on Friday after being kidnapped and sold to China by a Taiwanese man in early December.

-- A family of farmers from the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang is set to introduce their phoenix-shaped pineapples, used as decorations during the Lunar New Year. The fruit sells for about VND500,000 (US$22) a pair.

-- The Investment, Trade, and Tourism Promotion Center in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang has invested VND1.2 billion ($52,961) in four clean food and produce stores in My Tho City.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Book Street, located on Nguyen Van Binh Street in District 1, reached over VND26 billion ($1.14 million) in revenue in 2016 with nearly 500,000 books sold.
