The Hanoi culture department is slated to treat local residents and tourists to a unique fireworks displays on the Lunar New Year’s Eve tonight, January 27.

With the Party banning all localities from organizing pyrotechnic displays for Tet, Hanoi will air fireworks shows on giant LED screens located across the capital, five minutes before the clock strikes midnight into the Lunar New Year.

The five-minute program will feature a 30-second countdown, before showcasing fireworks and artistic lighting performances, To Van Dong, the culture department head, has said.

It is not clear what kinds of fireworks shows, whether the displays in previous years or from other countries, will be featured in the video.

LED screens will be installed at such get-together places as the Hanoi Opera House, HoanKiem (Sword) Lake, Ly Thai To Park, and Ho Tay (West Lake).

Dong also encouraged religious institutions to toll bells to ring in the New Year.

The Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam in December released a directive that requires all provinces and cities not to hold fireworks displays to celebrate Tet, or the Lunar New Year.

Tet falls on January 28 but celebrations often start one week before that and linger for another week after the date.

Provinces and cities in Vietnam normally organize 15-to-30-minute pyrotechnic shows on Lunar New Year’s Eve, using funds from either the state budget or the private sector.

The Secretariat is the highest implementation body of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The directive also requests that the funds earmarked for fireworks shows be used to support the poor during Tet.
