Teacher’s son accused of groping first-grade students in central Vietnam

Teacher’s son accused of groping first-grade students in central Vietnam

Ten female first-grade students in the Central Highland province of Lam Dong were allegedly harassed by the 13-year-old son of their teacher, at whose house they were staying for tutoring.

The girls’ parents have sent a joint letter to the education division of Bao Lam District in Lam Dong to voice their concerns over the incident, the division’s head Le Duc confirmed on Tuesday.

The victims were around six years of age, and were all attending first grade at Loc Thang B Elementary School in Bao Lam District.

As they have no class on the afternoons of Thursday and Friday, the girls were signed up by their parents to have lunch and nap at the house of H., a teacher at Loc Thang B, before attending tutoring lessons there in the afternoon.

The tutoring class was attended by a total of 12 students, ten of whom were girls.

In their letter, the parents said the harassment was uncovered on February 10 when one parent noticed something different in the behavior of their daughter.

When asked what the matter was, the girl confessed she had been groped by the teacher’s son while napping at their house.

Parents of other girls in the class shortly got wind of the incident, and together came to H.’s house demanding an explanation.

H. admitted that the harassment had taken place a day or two prior to the discovery, and that her 13-year-old son S. was indeed the one who had touched the female students.

S. is attending seventh grade at a secondary school in Bao Lam District.

The boy confessed to the physical harassment during the police’s investigation, saying he had touched the girls on their private parts, reportedly causing them pain.

As none of the parents have filed a formal request for medical evaluation of the damage done to their daughters, police are not able to verify the boy’s testimony.

As S. is an adolescent, he would not be charged with any criminal offense and would be left under the supervision of his parents, Bao Lam District Police said.

The school board has visited the victims’ houses to apologize, while H. has been suspended from teaching for a month while rotation options are being considered for the teacher, Le Duc said.

H. was also asked to pay VND10 million (US$446) to each of the girls’ family as compensation and have her son transferred to another school, to which the teacher agreed.
