Man climbs utility pole for second time in week in southern Vietnam

A man in the southern Vietnamese province of Binh Duong took another shot at climbing a high-voltage electrical transmission tower after reaching its top last weekend.

Le Dinh Bay, 29, a resident of Ben Cat Town, was escorted to the local police station on Thursday after authorities prevented him from making a second attempt at climbing an electrical tower.

The structure, about 46 meters high, supports a 220-kilovolt overhead power line stretching from My Phuoc Ward in Ben Cat to Tay Ninh Province.

Bay first climbed to the top the tower at around 8:00 am last Saturday where he stayed perched for nearly eight hours, drawing the attention and concern of local residents by continuously yelling “life is not fair.”

Power Transmission Company No. 4, charged with operating the power line, was forced to shut down the power supply at 2:00 pm that day to protect the man from electrocution, causing blackouts at multiple industrial parks in Binh Duong and Tay Ninh.

After coaxing from authorities, Bay eventually climbed down the tower at 7:30 pm and electricity was restored.

On Thursday afternoon, he returned to the same tower with what appeared to be the same intentions, only this time local residents spotted Bay when he was about five meters into the climb and notified police officers to bring him down.

At the police station, Bay wouldn’t fully explain why he climbed the structure, instead simply blaming his ‘unjust life’.

Bay is originally from the north-central province of Thanh Hoa and now works as a freelance construction worker in Ben Cat.

According to family members, he has recently been showing signs of psychological problems.
