-- A tropical depression formed on Saturday afternoon near Vietnam's Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago and expected to strengthen within the next 24 hours has been forecast to bring showers and thunderstorms to Central Highlands and southern  provinces, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

-- Work began on Saturday on two tunnels at the District 9 and Thu Duc District traffic point of Hanoi Highway in Ho Chi Minh City as part of a plan to expand the artery road, which links the southern metropolis with neighboring provinces to the east of the city.

-- A military helicopter rushing a 23-year-old soldier stationed on Tho Chu Island in Phu Quoc in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday afternoon for medical treatment.

-- A court in Go Dau District in the southern province of Tay Ninh on Saturday handed down seven-year sentences to two leaders of a large-scale dog theft ring, with their four accomplices also receiving jail terms.

-- Residents in Que Son District in the central province of Quang Nam have been outraged by a local company having illegally mined some hundred cubic meters of white sand each day in recent months.

-- More than 100 saplings were grown on Phan Vinh Island, part of Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago, on Saturday as part of a “Truong Sa Xanh” (Green Truong Sa) program, jointly initiated by the Vietnam People's Navy and Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
