-- Multiple memoranda of understanding on cooperation in economic matters and national defense were signed between Vietnam and Cambodia on Thursday during Vietnamese Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong’s official visit to Cambodia to mark the two countries’ 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

-- Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday requested cooperation from authorities of the Philippines in guaranteeing safety for two Vietnamese citizens still held hostage by terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, which had killed two other Vietnamese crewmen after capturing the sailors alive in an attack on their vessel.

-- The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has demanded firm administrative actions against a number of houses built in violation of their construction permits in Binh Chanh District, including forced demolition of the illegal buildings.

-- Despite the recent opening of a flyover near Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, which had been hoped to ease traffic congestion in the area, a three-hour traffic jam was still observed on the roads leading out of the hub at rush hour on Thursday morning.

-- The Southern Institute of Ecology and the Da Nang Tourism Association on Thursday co-signed a letter sent to the leaders of Vietnam in which the bodies proposed removing illegally built constructions on Da Nang’s Son Tra Peninsula, as well the reforestation of the peninsula to transform it into a biosphere reserve.

-- Dr. Nguyen Tac An, former director of the Vietnam National Institute of Oceanography, has spoken out about how his name had been cited without his knowledge as one of the scientists approving the dumping of one million cubic meters of ‘matter’ into the sea in south-central Vietnam, while in reality he had not been involved in any way in the plan.

-- A number of Vietnamese railway companies have installed equipment designed to prevent their employees, tasked with keeping a watch on level crossings, from dozing off on duty, a measure expected to bring down the number of railway accidents in Vietnam.

-- Nearly 50,000 cases of dengue fever have been admitted to hospitals across Vietnam so far in 2017, with Ho Chi Minh City reporting the highest number of patients diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease, at 9,536, according to the city’s Department of Preventive Medicine.

-- Vietnam is the world’s fifth-largest exporter of suitcases, backpacks and handbags, accounting for US$3.2 billion out of the industry’s total trade value of $300 billion in 2016, according to the latest statistics announced by the International Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association.

-- Exports and industrial production, especially in the field of smartphone manufacturing, have been the key factors in Vietnam’s remarkable economic growth of 6.2 percent during the second quarter of 2017, according to a recent report published by HSBC.
