-- One of the tropical depressions off southern Vietnam is forecast to weaken into a low-pressure zone on Thursday, while the other is still picking up strength and potentially becoming a storm, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

-- Floods began ravaging the south-central provinces of Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, and Quang Nam on Wednesday afternoon, isolating several areas and affecting the north-to-south railway operations.

-- Sand is being excessively exploited along a section of the Dong Nai River in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, resulting in serious subsidence that affects the lives and production of local residents.

-- Police in the north-central province of Quang Binh are investigating the death of a two-year-old boy whose body was found outside of his kindergarten after he went missing during recess time on Wednesday morning.

-- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has ordered the cessation of a fruit park project in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang to re-examine its environmental impact assessment A previous article by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper showed that the construction, which will fill up a section of the Tien (Front) River, may result in severe subsidence in the area.

Business

-- The Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs will cooperate with Japan’s International Manpower Development Organization to recruit and train Vietnamese laborers for their careers in the East Asian country.

-- The total amount of sugar kept at local factories has reached 312,000 metric tons as businesses are waiting to be able to import sugar at lower costs in 2018, when a reduced import-export tax on the product is applied, according to the Vietnam Sugarcane and Sugar Association.

-- A project on establishing a walking street in Cao Lanh City, located in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, has been approved and is expected to be open during next year’s Tet holiday.
