Downpour inundates streets, unroofs houses in Ho Chi Minh City

Downpour inundates streets, unroofs houses in Ho Chi Minh City

Sunday, November 19, 2017, 10:33 GMT+7

A downpour early Saturday evening turned multiple streets in Ho Chi Minh City into ‘rivers’ as local houses were unroofed by severe winds.

A drove of vehicles suffered from engine failure in the waist-deep water, leading to traffic congestion on some outskirt roads.

On National Road 50, which connects Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta provinces of Long An and Tien Giang, kilometers of vehicles could be observed stranded in water deeper than one meter.

Nguyen Van Linh and Huynh Tan Phat Streets in District 7 also suffered from congestion as hundreds of commuters were forced to seek street-side repair services.

Fierce winds that accompanied the rain uprooted many trees in Thu Duc, Binh Thanh and Go Vap Districts, while unroofing local houses.

Some parts of Ho Chi Minh City experienced power outages as utility poles fell over in the strong winds.

The downpour occurred as a result of Typhoon Kirogi, which is forecast to make landfall in south-central Vietnam on Sunday and weaken to a tropical depression.

Tens of thousands of residents from Binh Thuan to Khanh Hoa Provinces have been evacuated to safety before the storm hits.
